Our MissionMusic for Life Alliance logo

The Music For Life Alliance is a 501c(3) tax exempt, not for profit charity that facilitates the efforts of individuals and organizations making music learning accessible to young people who may not otherwise be able to experience the educational, psychological, and social benefits of making music. Through awards, grants and recognition, and by creating and maintaining a national database, the Music For Life Alliance helps support and unify grassroots efforts across the country.

W O Smith Music School

Since 1984, W.O. Smith Music School has introduced the world of music to thousands of deserving children in Nashville.

W.O. Smith Music School makes affordable, quality music instruction available to children from low-income families. We transform lives through music.

Private Lessons

Ensemble
Students participating in performing ensembles will learn various musical concepts through the art of ensemble singing/playing. Ensembles will perform throughout the year at W.O. Smith recitals, senior centers, civic organizations, and special events. Students are permitted to participate in more than one ensemble as long as they meet the entrance requirements.
The school was founded in 1984 by William Oscar Smith. We serve children, aged 7 to 18, living in the Metropolitan Nashville area. Students must meet income guidelines for the USDA Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Classes and lessons are fifty cents each. Students are provided with an instrument of their choosing, a volunteer teaching artist, and any necessary musical materials for their studiesVolunteer teaching artists are community members, local performers, studio artists, and university students with a passion for sharing their musical gifts.
Group Classes

Summer Camp
It`s not necessary to be on a music career track to benefit from focused practice sessions, setting and achieving goals, or presenting a personal achievement to the public. We believe that the self-discipline involved in the process can help any developing person, whether or not he or she goes on to pursue a career in music. Music was my ticket out of the ghetto, and my hope is that music can help the youngsters we touch to realize their own ambitions. William Oscar Smith

Awards and Recognition for Organizations Making a Difference

There are a growing number of individuals and organizations stepping up to the great need for kids to learn music, in the face of ever-growing cutbacks in the arts. We believe that these organizations need support and recognition for the positive impact they are having on our next generation of citizens. MFLA grants and awards, as well as our community of sharing resources are but a few ways to encourage their work and dedication. If you have a recommendation for our next MFLA awards, please email Al Norton.
